Italy On the Horizon

Updated: Nov 12

I recently got back from an exploratory trip with a small group of friends to Northern Italy. Included in the group was Kristene Fitzgerald who oversees all of my European trips for Frontiers . Kristene and I were there to explore the possibility of offering Italy as a fly fishing destination. Along with the fishing, we hoped that there would be ample touring opportunities for non-fishing guest. We have a lot of clients who would love to take a non- fishing companion with them but there has to be something for them to do. Ireland has always answered that with great fishing and touring.

After spending a week in Italy, were convinced that Italy can do the same. We had some high water but everyone caught fish. The rivers are enticing with all the water that we fished being catch and release, the scenery in the mountains is breathtaking. The food and wine were as expected over the top. I personally can’t wait to go back. Honestly its hard to find new destinations but for me, this is a winner. Add to this there is the possibility of including an add on to Slovenia, another outstanding fishery right next door. Kristene has already started to work on an itinerary for 2025. I will keep you posted with our progress on dates. Meantime if you have any interest in joining me next year, please let me know. Friend and traveling companion Art Rorex has already signed up, Art is always looking for a new adventure.

Currently I am traveling to Turneffe Flats lodge in Belize with a group of friends for a week of saltwater fly fishing. Turneffe is my favorite salt water destination an always offers shots of Permit my favorite flats fish. Ill keep you posted when I get back.

One last thing we just had a cancellation on our January departure to Pira Lodge in Northen Argentina. Pira offers in my opinion the best Golden Dorado fishing anywhere. The lodge its self is one of my favorites, the Ibera marsh is one of the largest unexplored marsh lands in the world and along with the prolific Golden Dorado fishing it truly is a birders paradise. January is the perfect time to get out of  Pennsylvania winter and go somewhere warm and if you have never caught a Golden Dorado, you have a real treat coming. This is always a sold out destination and would be except for the unfortunate medical situation that has occurred to one of my best friends. Call Hank Ingrahm at Frontiers if you would like more information. That’s all for now - everyone stay safe and thanks for checking in.
